I love a salad in its many forms - grains, greens and veggies, but the word 'salad', I hate. I hate the fact that it sounds so boring, so lame, so generic and so unsatisfying. It needs to have another name. The Simpsons were on to it first, they knew what was up.
At restaurants I very rarely order salad, unless it comes with meat. Or the meat comes with salad. I actually get scared and worried that I'm not going to like my meal and I am going to leave disappointed (really). Recently though, I have been pleasantly surprised. Salad has developed (or was it always decent?). Quinoa, rice, veggies and other fun ingredients all appear frequently in salad dishes on menus now, so I have started being adventurous and ordering salads. I actually don't mind it. It does turn my stomach a little bit when I order a salad over pork belly, because seriously, thats just unheard of for me. But I am trying to get some more veggies in to me, and salads are a great way to do that. Surprisingly yum and actually surprisingly filling. Plus, how can I go into a career and advise people about nutrition, when I don't practise what I preach?!
So, I think Bart and Lisa were wrong, you do win friends with salad! You would definitely win more friends though with a better name than 'salad'.
A delicious salad recipe, using ingredients I had in the fridge - broccoli, red capsicum - just in time for warm summer nights :-)
